Do road signs seem blurrier—even at a short distance?
When reading, do you hold the page further away to read it?
Are you suffering from a minor or major loss of vision?

Annual Wellness Eye Exams

If you answered “Yes,” to any of the questions above, you are not alone. Many people find that their vision tends to suffer more as they age. Dr. William Fruchtman O.D. is your personal optometrist in Florida and New Jersey. Our annual wellness eye exams performed at both offices can help keep your vision in the best condition possible.

For some people, vision changes may occur in childhood. For others, vision loss can start in early to middle-aged adulthood or in their senior years. This continual loss of vision can be due to aging, environmental reasons (such as prolonged computer or screen exposure), natural heredity or eye disease. In fact, if you haven’t experienced a change in your vision over the years, you’re probably in a small minority.

Whatever the reason for your loss of vision, we understand that you may be frustrated. As your New Jersey and Florida optometrist, that’s why we take the time to listen to each patient. We want to understand every aspect of your eye health so that we can restore as much vision for you as possible.

Your  New Jersey and Florida Optometrist for Better Eye Health

Some patients don’t realize that they’ve experienced a loss of vision. Unlike other parts of your body, your eyes usually don’t hurt when something is wrong. And changes can happen slowly over time, so any initial changes in eyesight may be imperceptible to you. Every year, we have patients who leave our office surprised at how much better they can see with their new prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Benefits of Regular Eye Exams

An annual eye exam can help you achieve and maintain excellent eye health. Routine or annual wellness eye exams can detect a variety of eye concerns before they become a major issue. We will check you for the following eye issues:

  • Nearsightedness
  • Farsightedness
  • Astigmatism
  • Vision problems
  • Eye disease
  • Eye infections
  • Eye injuries
  • General eye issues
  • And more!

At William Fruchtman O.D., we are dedicated to providing patients of all ages with top-notch, comprehensive eye care. Our state-of-the-art equipment aids in the diagnosis and management of all types of eye diseases and vision problems. And we take the time to continually educate ourselves on the most up-to-date medical information and treatments for our patients.

Eye Exams as Preventative Treatment

An annual eye exam is more than just a vision screening. Eye doctors are often the first to diagnose systemic chronic diseases, such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, and glaucoma. A comprehensive eye exam by your optometrists at William Fruchtman O.D. can provide a better possibility of early diagnosis. Our main goal is to help prevent eye problems that can threaten your vision and cause other issues in your body.

During your comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor will verify if prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses may be necessary to improve your vision. Your optometrist will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together, and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

Many health and eye issues can be prevented with appropriate prevention. By taking care of your health and scheduling regular eye screenings and vision exams, you will have the best chance of retaining the most vision possible. From eye exams to eye injuries and eye infections, your team at William Fruchtman O.D. has you covered.

In addition to wellness eye exams, we offer fashionable eyewear for those who may need eye glasses and/or contact lenses.

How Often Should I Schedule an Eye Exam?

As your optometrist in New Jersey and Florida, we recommend a comprehensive eye exam every year to maintain vision and prevent vision impairment as best as possible. Depending on your age, any environmental or hereditary risk factors, and any current corrective lenses, you may need to schedule more frequent screenings.

Young children require at least an annual eye exam to detect vision problems that may interfere with seeing in the classroom and learning. We recommend that your child’s first eye exam occur at about six months old. This will help us catch any potential vision problems right away.

Children already wearing corrective lenses will need to be fitted for new glasses as they grow. And due to normal growth, their prescription may need to be updated many times before reaching adulthood.

What Can I Expect During My Eye Exam?

Your eye exam should last between 20 and 30 minutes. Before your eye exam, we will ask about your medical history and any vision problems you might be experiencing. Your comprehensive eye exam may include some or all of the following tests:
  • Standard eye chart
  • Eye alignment
  • Functional vision tests
  • Manual refraction with a phoropter
  • Slit lamp exam of the front of the eye
  • Applanation tonometry (glaucoma test)
  • Exam of retina after pupil dilation

If eye dilation is necessary, we’ll place one or more eye drops used in each eye. The eye drops may sting your eyes a little. (Some patients may experience a medicine taste in the mouth.) Once your pupils are dilated, your optometrist will shine a bright light into your eyes to examine them.

The eye drops may cause your eyes to be temporarily extra sensitive to sunlight. You’ll want to wear sunglasses after your appointment, or we can send you home with special darkening shades until your eyes lose their sensitivity. Some patients do drive themselves home after having their pupils dilated. However, it may be best to arrange alternate transportation home. The effects of the drops usually last between four and 24 hours, depending upon the strength of the drops and each individual patient.
